Hi !

In this issue, you'll read:
A VALENTINE'S DAY PRAYER
THE BOOK OF 1st CORINTHIANS - PART ELEVEN

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR - THIRTY SIXTH EDITION

Welcome to this week's edition of the W.I.N. E-Mail Newsletter. I would just like to let you all know that Destiny of Hope Fellowship in Aberdeen Washington will be hosting this year's Annual Convention July 28-30, 2006. Keep Pastor Dell, Sister Brenda, and their staff in your prayers as they make preparations for this wonderful event. We invite all of you to come join with us for three days of food, fun, and Worship of our Lord Jesus Christ! More on this upcoming event will be in the next edition of this newsletter.

This week we would like to take a moment to "spotlight" Pastor Linda Mason of The Upper-Room Fellowship in Everett Washington. The following quote is from the pen of Bishop David Lathrop, Senior Pastor of The Upper-Room Fellowship.

"Pastor Linda arrived at The Upper-Room Fellowship about two and a half years ago with a desire to receive teaching and training in the pulpit ministry. During this short time God has done a wondrous work.

As a result of God's work and of her steadfastness, faithfulness and dedication Pastor Linda has become an anointed counselor, teacher and minister. She currently serves the Church as the Associate Pastor, filling the pulpit on a regular basis where she ministers under the anointing of the Holy Ghost.

Pastor Linda is an encouragement to me as Pastor.

Pastor Linda has the calling of Evangelist on her life; as such, she witnesses daily to the goodness of God's salvation, gives testimony often as to what God has accomplished in her life, and invites others to enjoy the relationship she has with the living God.

Pastor Linda's desire is to enter full time ministry and travel to do the work of her calling."

Until next time...God bless each of you in all that you undertake!

In Jesus Name,
Rev. Sam T. Leigh

A VALENTINE'S DAY PRAYER

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – I CORINTHIANS 13:4-7 NIV

Lord,
Because love is patient…
Help me to be slow to judge, but quick to listen.
Hesitant to criticize, but eager to encourage,
remembering your endless patience with me.

Because love is kind…
Help my words to be gentle and my actions to be thoughtful. Remind me to smile and to say “Please” and “Thank You”
because those little things still mean so much.

Because love does not envy or boast, and it is not proud…
Help me have a heart that is humble and sees the good in others. May I celebrate and appreciate all that I have and all that I am, as well as doing the same for those around me.

Because love is not rude or self-seeking…
Help me to speak words that are easy on the ear and on the heart. When I’m tempted to get wrapped up in my own little world, remind me there’s a great big world out there full of needs and hurts.

Because love is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs…
Help me to forgive others as you have forgiven me. When I want to hold onto a grudge, gently help me release it so I can reach out with a hand of love instead.

Because love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth…
Help me stand up for what is right and good. May I defend the defenseless, and help the helpless. Show me how I can make a difference.

Because love always protects and always trusts…
Help me to be a refuge for those around me. When the world outside is harsh and cold, may my heart be a place of acceptance and warmth.

Finally, because love always perseveres…
Help my heart continually beat with love for You and others. Thank you for this day when we celebrate love, and for showing us what that word really means. Amen.

THE BOOK OF 1st CORINTHIANS - PART ELEVEN

I. Devotional Reading

Each morning, read a Scripture passage of your choice. Talk with the Lord as you read his Word. When you are finished, go back and select one or two verses that you believe the Lord is using to speak to your heart. Meditate thoughtfully and prayerfully on what he is saying to you.

II. Bible Study

In this edition, we will be reading 1 Corinthians 13. This chapter is often called "The Chapter of Love" and for good reason, but it is important to see it in its context of Paul's discussion on the gifts of the Spirit (in chapter 12 and chapter 14). To see this context, first read 1 Corinthians 12:31 and 14:1).

Chapter 13 can be divided into three subsections. Read each subsection and answer the questions associated with them. Type out your answers (or jot them down on a piece of paper) and place in your Bible for further meditation and study.

Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

1. What is the single most important ingredient in life's activities, without which all the good things we might do are meaningless? (13:1-3)
2. How does 13:1, 2 relate to 12:7-10?

Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

1. How do the descriptions of love listed in 13:4 relate to the rest of the book of 1 Corinthians? (note particularly 1:10-12; 3:3; 4:6-13; 5:6)
2. How do the descriptions of love listed in 13:5 relate to the rest of the book of 1 Corinthians? (note particularly 6:1-8)

Read 1 Corinthians 13:8-13

1. What is it that never fails and how does this compare with the gifts of the Spirit? (13:8-10)
2. What two imperfect things does Paul liken the operation of the gifts of the Spirit to in 13:11-12?
3. What are the three things that remain and which is the greatest? (13:13)

III. Memory Verse

1 Corinthians 13:4-5; "4Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil..."

Here are a few suggestions that may help you to memorize your memory verses:

1. Ask the Lord to help you remember his Word (see John 14:26).

2. Use the version of the Bible you are most familiar with. What you normally read in your Bible is what you need to be memorizing.

3. Don't just memorize the contents of the verse; memorize its "address" (the verse reference) as well. You can do this by following this pattern: Step 1: reference; Step 2: verse content; Step 3: reference. Then repeat steps 1-3. Note that you are quoting the reference twice as many times as you quote the actual verse content. This gives the verse a clear "reference tag."

4. After you have read your memory verse out aloud several times, try going through your memory verse without reading your computer screen.

5. Look up your memory verse in your Bible. Look at its immediate context and read the verses that come before and after your memory verse.

6. Print out your memory verse or jot it down on a piece of paper. Take this paper with you when you go to work or do other daily activities. Meditate on the meaning of the verse throughout the day.

7. During your noon appointment with the Lord, take out your memory verse and go over it again. Talk to the Lord about what this verse means to you personally.

8. In the evening (at either your evening study or your evening devotions), see if you can quote your memory verse from memory. Then, without looking at the memory verse itself, see if you can find it in your Bible.

9. The next day, before you begin committing a new verse to memory, rehearse your previous day's memory verse and see if you can remember it (without cheating!).

10. Finally, at the end of the week (possibly on Sunday), collect all your week's memory verses, rehearse them and see if you can recall them without reading them. Spend a little extra time on any verses you have difficulty recalling.

11. Remember: Don't just memorize a verse. Put it into practice (James 1:22). It is not being able to quote a verse from memory that counts. It is His Word abiding in your heart that counts (John 15:7). When you actually apply a verse consistently to your daily life; that is when you truly know that verse!
